The Old Post Office Block Now Covers Lunch and Dinner in Downtown Burlingame, With Brunch Next

"The Village Pub is the living room for Woodside. Spruce is the living room for Presidio Heights, and we wanted the Old Post Office to be that for Hillsborough and Burlingame." That is Tim Stannard of Bacchus Management Group, speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle as quoted by SFist.

The building he means stands at 220 Park Road, and that address has been changing for years. Over the last two years one redevelopment has turned it into an office tower, a public square, and now a block where you can eat at most hours of the day. The restaurants were the last piece, and both opened in October.

Ten days that finished the block

Most of this happened between October 1 and October 11:

  • October 1: The Old Post Office opened inside the restored post office at 220 Park Road.
  • October 10: Broadway Grill at 1400 Broadway served its last regular dinner.
  • October 11: Marufuku Ramen held its grand opening at 225 Lorton Avenue, and its regular hours began the next day.
  • Mid-October: Weekend brunch starts at The Old Post Office. Eater SF reported a Saturday, October 17 start, but the restaurant's own reservations page lists October 18.

The two new restaurants are part of the same project. The San Mateo Daily Journal placed 225 Lorton inside the 220 Park retail space when it reported on earlier planned tenants there. So the ramen counter and the prix fixe dining room share a development. Next to them is the Town Square, which the Daily Journal reported opened April 2 between Park Road and Lorton Avenue.

Above the dining room, an office building that's full

The restaurants have built-in daytime customers. The San Francisco Standard reported in March that 220 Park, a six-story, 185,000-square-foot complex that opened in 2025, was already fully leased to Confluent, Upstart, and SkyKnight Capital. The Standard also called the tower the tallest structure in Burlingame "by a wide margin."

That helps explain the hours on this block. The Old Post Office serves a weekday lunch, and Marufuku splits its weekdays into a lunch window and a dinner window. Both schedules put a midday option downstairs from a full office building.

The post office itself was built in 1941 under a New Deal program in a Spanish and Art Deco style. It was designated a historic resource in 2020, and the Standard reported it sat empty for nearly a decade after closing. To build an underground parking garage, the entire structure was temporarily moved about 120 feet in 2023, SFist reported.

Inside The Old Post Office, and how to get a seat

Because of historic preservation rules, the dining room keeps pieces of the old post office. There is a wall of brass PO boxes, the original terrazzo floor, and a locked glass memo case whose key, SFist notes, is long gone.

Executive chef Jonathan Granada came to Bacchus from Los Angeles and calls the menu contemporary American, with nods to Asia, Spain, and France. Dinner is a $120 prix fixe. It includes laminated brioche rolls and a canapé, a choice of first course and entrée, and desserts from pastry chef Kyle Caporicci. Lunch is a $55 prix fixe.

The dish getting the most attention is a dry-aged rotisserie duck for two at $80. Only six are available each night, by reservation. The breast is carved with a sauce made at the table, and the legs are cooked on a binchotan grill. SFGATE's early meal report praised the breast and described the multi-course duck service as extravagant but enjoyable.

You don't need $120 or a reservation to come in. The adjacent cocktail lounge, the Postmaster's Bar, has a more casual menu that includes a burger and fries. According to the restaurant's reservations page, the bar and lounge seat guests first come, first served. Dining room reservations are online through OpenTable or at 650-502-1000.

Marufuku covers the Lorton side

Marufuku Ramen serves Hakata-style ramen, as the Downtown Burlingame events listing put it when announcing the grand opening. Its regular schedule began October 12. Weekdays have a lunch window and a dinner window, and weekends run straight through from late morning to evening.

So the two restaurants on the block have different price points and different schedules. The table below combines them with the market on the same street.

When Park Road and Lorton block Source of the hours
Weekday lunch Old Post Office lunch 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Marufuku 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eater SF; Marufuku
Weekday dinner Old Post Office 5 to 10 p.m.; Marufuku 5 to 9 p.m. Eater SF; Marufuku
Thursday late afternoon Fresh Market on Park Road, 3 to 7 p.m. San Mateo County
Weekend midday Old Post Office brunch 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., starting mid-October; Marufuku 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Eater SF; Marufuku
Weekend dinner Old Post Office 5 to 10 p.m.; Marufuku until 9 p.m. Eater SF; Marufuku

The Thursday row is where the block's pieces overlap the most. The Burlingame Fresh Thursday Market began its 2026 run on May 7, according to Downtown Burlingame. The county's farmers market directory lists it on Park Road from 3 to 7 p.m., and dinner service on the same block starts at 5. The county isn't consistent about when the season ends, though. One county page says May through October, and another says May through November. Check before you plan a late-season Thursday around it.

On Broadway, the change runs toward mornings

The same week the Park Road block got busier in the evening, a Broadway restaurant changed its hours in the other direction. The Burlingame-Hillsborough Times reported on October 9 that Broadway Grill, the family-owned restaurant at 1400 Broadway, would end regular dinner service after Saturday, October 10. It has launched a breakfast menu served Wednesday through Sunday from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Saturday mornings come with bottomless mimosas.

Broadway Grill isn't closing. The Burlingame Chamber of Commerce announced that dinner service is moving to private celebrations and community events. You can book through the "Book a Private Event" link on the restaurant's website or by calling 650-393-5897. Live music is changing too. The restaurant told the Times it will offer performances as special community events instead of weekly shows.

As the Times put it, Broadway now has a new morning option five days a week. Its breakfast window closes at 2 p.m., about when the weekday lunch windows on Park Road close too. That leaves a Saturday with two easy halves, breakfast on Broadway and dinner by the Town Square.

Two dates left on the downtown calendar

The fall and holiday events also take place close to the new block. Both are run by the Downtown Burlingame Business Improvement District and listed on its events page.

Fall Fest, Sunday, October 25, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The lineup includes a petting zoo, kids' activities, a "choochoo train," arts and crafts, specialty foods and products, music, and a Halloween costume contest for kids and families. Burlingame Parks and Recreation is among the listed sponsors. It falls on a Sunday, during what should be the second weekend of brunch at The Old Post Office.

Winterfest, Friday, December 4, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The BID and City of Burlingame Parks and Recreation host the traditional tree lighting, followed by a short train ride around Burlingame Avenue and hot chocolate. Some older calendar pages online still show the December 5, 2025 date, so go by the BID's 2026 listing.

No fall or holiday program for the Town Square itself had been posted as of mid-October. The BID's dedicated Town Square listing still shows the June series of music and arts programming. For now, the block's evening schedule comes from the two restaurants and the Thursday market.

When the post office reopened as a restaurant, the block around it already had offices, a square, and a market. If you're thinking about how changes like this one, or Broadway Grill's new schedule, fit the part of Burlingame you live in or want to live in, Luis Vasquez can talk it through with you in English or Spanish.
